What is Tech IB?

Technology Investment Banking is a coverage group: bankers who advise companies in software, internet, semiconductors, hardware, IT services, fintech, and cybersecurity on M&A, capital raising (IPOs, follow-ons), and financing — the same toolkit as generalist IB, applied to a single, fast-moving industry.

• The work is identical in form to generalist IB (models, pitch books, DD, process) but the content is tech: different business models, metrics, and valuation logic.
• It’s the coverage group most exposed to the growth/VC ecosystem — which makes it the strongest generalist launchpad into Growth Equity, tech PE, VC, and tech corporate development.

Tech vs. TMT

• Many banks house Technology inside a broader TMT group (Technology, Media, Telecom). Others run a standalone Tech team with sub-desks (software, internet, semis).
• Technology → software/SaaS, internet, semiconductors, hardware, IT services.
• Media → content, entertainment, gaming, streaming, advertising.
• Telecom → carriers and infrastructure (AT&T, Deutsche Telekom) — fewer deals, but very large ones.
• The lines blur (is Netflix tech or media?), so most boutiques brand themselves ‘TMT’ regardless of their true tilt.
